GUMI, South Korea, Oct. 19 (Yonhap) -- A dust explosion in a silo at a chemical company's plant in southeastern South Korea left a worker dead and four others injured Wednesday, police said.
The explosion at the plant of Star Chemical Co. took place in an industrial complex in the southeastern city of Gumi around 9:21 a.m. when the silo containing dust of terephthalic acid caught fire while workers were removing the silo's pipes. Terephthalic acid, a commodity chemical, is a raw material used in producing polyester, widely used for clothes.
One of the five workers, identified by his last name Park, sustained a serious injury, but the injuries of the remaining four workers who were evacuated from the scene were not life-threatening. Park was pronounced dead after being sent to a nearby hospital.
Police are questioning the survivors to determine what caused the accident.
The chemical company was taking procedures to go into liquidation after closing its business in January 2013 due to financial difficulties.

据报道，爆炸是在对工厂进行拆除作业途中发生的。现场工作的5名工人中，有4人成功躲避，但1人受重伤，被送到附近医院接受治疗。
爆炸导致工厂附近地区发生了停电事故，附近住宅也出现沙发和窗户不停动摇的现象。
此外，在距离工厂爆炸1公里处出现黑色浓烟。
