 VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) — A failed air-handling unit at a Vandalia manufacturing facility caused a small fire and subsequent explosion late Monday morning.According to Vandalia Fire Chief Chad Follick, crews arrived at Adare Pharm at about 10:45 a.m. and discovered a small fire on the roof of the building and the air unit that had undergone “a catastrophic failure.”Follick says he believes the fire was caused by an explosion of a piece of machinery. Investigators say something may have gotten stuck in an air handling unit.

The fire hadn’t made its way into the building and was limited to just the roof.He credited the Adare management for getting the building on Center Drive evacuated promptly.As a precaution, HAZMAT was called to assist due to the possibility chemicals used in the manufacturing process had escaped, but nothing was found.“There was no release of chemicals outside of the building,” said Follick.He said that sensors registering the chemicals’ release were actually fired in error due to damage from the explosion.“Everything in the building as far as nitrogen or any chemicals in the building is all functioning as it’s supposed to,” said Follick.There were no injuries among employees or first responders. Follick said the roof around the fire had been damaged, and follow-up investigations will determine the extent.Follick said there was debris around the building.Vandalia Division of Fire says that Vandalia, Butler Township, Huber Heights and Englewood fire crews assisted.
